About

The tomato frog is a bright-red amphibian that looks like the fruit it is named for, and its color is a warning: when grabbed, it puffs up its body and oozes a sticky, irritating secretion from its skin that discourages snakes and other predators. Females are the true tomato-red ones; males are smaller and more orange. Endemic to Madagascar, the species lives in wet lowland habitats and is threatened mainly by habitat loss and collection.
