Istiophorus platypterus
Sailfish are among the fastest fish in the sea, with reported burst speeds approaching 100 km/h, and one of the most striking silhouettes: a huge, sail-like dorsal fin they raise and lower to herd schools of sardines into tight bait balls. Once the school is balled, they slash through it with their long, sword-shaped bills, flicking stunned fish out of the water with sideways swipes. Sailfish hunt in loose groups and are prized by sport fishermen for spectacular leaps.
