About
Red squirrels are agile tree squirrels with rust-red coats and conspicuous ear tufts in winter. They hang upside down to strip seeds from conifer cones and cache nuts for winter, forgetting some that later sprout into new trees. In Britain their decline is tied to forest loss and to squirrelpox carried by introduced grey squirrels, but across the vast boreal forests of Europe and Asia they remain widespread.
