About
The maned wolf is neither wolf nor fox but the sole member of its genus, a long-legged canid evolved to see over the tall grass of South American savannas. It is mostly solitary and nocturnal, communicating with a roar-like bark, and its distinctive urine smell is familiar to zoo visitors. Habitat conversion to farmland, road deaths, and disease from domestic dogs are its main threats.
