About
White-tailed deer raise the white underside of their tail like a warning flag as they bound away, a signal visible across the whole herd. They thrive in the patchy edge habitat humans create and can reach high densities where hunting is light. Heavy browsing by abundant deer suppresses forest regeneration and songbird habitat, which makes their management a central issue in eastern North American woodlands.
