Shoebill

The shoebill stands over a metre tall and stares motionless over African swamps before striking lungfish with one of the largest bills of any bird. It builds floating nests in papyrus and usually raises a single chick. Its prehistoric appearance and statue-still hunting have made it a birdwatcher's prize, but habitat loss, disturbance at nests, and the illegal bird trade have reduced the world population to a few thousand pairs.
