About

The black caiman is the biggest predator in the Amazon basin, and one of the largest crocodilians on Earth. Dark, scaled armor helps it melt into the night water as it ambushes fish, turtles, and even capybaras at the water’s edge. Despite its size and power, decades of hunting for its hide pushed the species close to extinction in the twentieth century; protected populations have since recovered across much of its range.
