About
African spurred tortoises are the largest mainland tortoises, using powerful forelimbs to dig sheltering burrows. They graze tough dryland vegetation and survive long periods with limited water. Habitat loss, overcollection, and trade pressure have made wild populations increasingly vulnerable.
