Le plus grand et le plus menacé des trois zèbres, le zèbre de Grévy porte les rayures les plus fines, un ventre blanc neige et d’immenses oreilles rondes. Ses rayures couvrent les jambes jusqu’au sabot et se terminent en une échelle noir et blanc que deux individus ne partagent jamais.

Les mâles défendent des territoires marqués à l’odeur le long des rivières, où les femelles avec leurs poulains viennent boire et brouter en hardes lâches. Il en reste moins de 3 000 à l’état sauvage, comprimés par la sécheresse, la concurrence du bétail et un territoire qui rétrécit.
